The release of two new Hesperian titles, A Health Handbook for Women with Disabilities and Un Libro Para Parteras, has kept our shipping room extremely busy this month. Our hardworking staff and devoted volunteers are filling box after box with copies going to our mail order and on-line customers and, thanks to SIDA and the Compton Foundation, they’re also sending thousands of complimentary copies to people in underserved communities. Among those receiving free copies are groups that collaborated with us on writing and testing the book, such as the Southern Africa Federation of the Disabled in Zimbabwe, the Family Centered Initiative for Challenged Persons in Nigeria, and ASECSA, the Asociación de Servicios Comunitarios de Salud (Community Health Service Association) of Guatemala,
When these funds run out, we will continue to provide valuable health materials to communities in need through your ongoing support of our Gratis Fund books program. The Gratis Fund responds to the reality that often those who most need our publications are the least able to afford them. Here is an excerpt from one of the many letters we receive from Gratis recipients:
“I am extremely glad writing you this letter on behalf of my colleagues to thank you for the assistance you provided us by supplying us “Where There Is No Doctor” and “HIV, Health and Your Community.” I must confess that the two books have become indispensable in our community here and we take great pride in reading it because of its simplicity and clarity of expression. With regards to how the books were used, I take pride in saying that words cannot fully express the feelings we have had in them. For instance since we started using them, we have been able to reduce our expenditure on drugs and also cut down on over reliance on them. Not only that but also, we have been enlightened on the dangers associated with the usage of most drugs which hitherto we were using them indiscriminately. Above all we have acquired knowledge on how to avoid preventable diseases by keeping our environment clean.” -- Cudjoe I. Volta Region, Ghana
