In our teaching hospital at Sevagram (Maharashtra) recently we were able to get imatinib for patients with blood cancer(chronic myeloid leukemia)at Rs.180 per tablet- i.e. Rs. 5400 (about 110 $) per month! We need to ensure that patients with blood cancer are not denied effective drugs simply because a pharma company wants to make money.

The write-up has come up very well.Drug Action Forum Karnataka an NGO of which Dr.Gopal Dabade is president and I am the joint secretary has given call to bycot drugs manufactured by Novartis.I am a medical practitioner and I am not prescribing any Novartis drugs since the time the campaign was launched. It is good that it has come up on the Hesperian foundation weblog so that it can reach large chunk of the community.
